CEO Book Club Vol 13: “Creating the Organization of the Future”

July 17, 2023

Welcome back to the CEO Book Club! In this edition, Ajay Patel, CEO of SMA, has selected a new book “Creating the Organization of the Future” by Dr. Bernard Jaworski and Dr. Virginia Cheung. Dr. Jaworski is the Peter F. Drucker Chair at the Drucker School of Management of the Claremont Graduate University. Dr. Cheung is an Associate Research Fellow at the School of Management, Shenzhen University. Their new book gives a straightforward approach to each of these critical elements of a successful business, a clear definition of what each is how to write it, and what makes a difference between a good one and a bad one. Dr. Jaworski’s approach fully embraces the philosophy of management guru Peter F. Drucker in this new take on MVPVC!

Getting your organization’s mission, vision, purpose, values, and culture (MVPVC) right is crucial to success, at the company level and for your specific organization in the company. They write that MVPVC is about setting the direction of the firm beyond just the immediate future to “respond to marketplace developments but also to shape the evolution of the market” over the long term.

The authors provide a practical and effective definition of these five elements of business success. The first three, mission, vision, and purpose, are externally focused on the marketplace and the last two, values and culture, are internally focused on how the work of the business gets done. They bring these concepts into the modern world of business with detailed definitions and best-in-class examples to help bring the concepts to life. The authors also suggested specific criteria that you can use to determine how good your MVPVC is, and where it can be improved.

If you aspire to be a visionary leader, this is a must-have book. “Creating the Organization of the Future” provides you with a step-by-step guide on how to set the direction of your organization for long-term success by embracing and using mission, vision, purpose, values, and culture as the driving forces. It’s more than just a business concept or well-worn jargon, but the enduring principles to guide your company or organization.

Last week, we had the honor of having Dr. Jaworski at our sixth Global Town Hall event to talk about key concepts from the book with Peter Weitzner, Business Journalist and Professor at Chapman University interviewed. As a bonus, Dr. Jaworski scored our own mission, vision, and purpose based on his criteria. To watch the Global Town Hall, click HERE to watch the entire event on our YouTube channel.
